Charles Dickens once called Middletown's High Street the most beautiful street in the world, and Middletown's historic district is still impressive. Broad Street and Main Street are at the center of this district.

The scenic shoreline of the Long Island Sound is not far away, and in addition to the Connecticut River itself, various streams, ponds, and lakes are in the area. Parks in the city include the Highland Historic District, the Metro South Historic District, Palmer Field, Smith Park, Marzalek Park, Seven Falls Highway Park, Crystal Lake State Access Area, Washington Street Historic District, and Washington Square. Two new 18-hole golf courses have recently been approved. Nearby are Wadsworth Falls State Park and Cockaponset State Forest.
