Clinton


Clinton, Connecticut, a New England shoreline village steeped in colonial history, is located on Long Island Sound midway between New York and Boston. Today the city’s population of 13,500 residents  expands in the summers to 20,000, as visitors and residents alike enjoy beautiful beaches, harbors, marinas, historical sites, parks with hiking and nature trails, as well as quaint village shops, fine restaurants and coffeehouses, museums, live theaters, spas, art galleries, a farmers market, a winery, and Castle State Park, Hammonassett Beach State Park and Meigs Point Nature Center, which has two miles of sandy beach and 900 acres of nature trails.

Clinton’s Main Street and Green are lined with beautifully restored colonial and Victorian homes.  However, a variety of residential and commercial real estate properties are available in Clinton.  Townhomes, condos, golf course homes, waterfront property, luxury homes, retirement community properties, investment properties—there’s something for everyone.

Clinton traces its history from 1663, and boasts many historical homes and properties, some built before the Revolutionary War. Its picturesque Liberty Green was once a Revolutionary War encampment visited by General George Washington & Lafayette, and its Main Street has a milestone placed in the 1750s by Benjamin Franklin.  Residents proudly point out a bridge built before 1700 and a canon taken by John Paul Jones from an English privateer and used in the wars of 1776 and 1812, and they are justly proud of the Clinton Historical Library with its excellent genealogy section and its colonial herb garden.

Clinton lies within easy commuting distance from the cities of New Haven, Middletown, and New London, while the capital city of Hartford is only 38 miles away.  Median income in Clinton is above the state average, and unemployment is below state average. Some of the industries providing employment include educational, health and social services (21.5%), manufacturing (18.3%), and retail trade (13.7%).

Excellent local educational facilities include public and private elementary and high schools as well as the many colleges and universities near Clinton, including Wesleyan University (about 22 miles), Suny at Stony Brook (about 26 miles), Quinnipiac University (about 28 mile), Gateway Community College (about 28 miles), Yale University (about 29 miles),University of New Haven (about 31 miles), and Southern Connecticut State University (about 31 miles).

The Clinton Land Conservation Trust promotes the preservation of natural resources, including water resources, marshland, swamps, woodlands and open spaces, and unique scenic and historic sites.  Local annual events include the Clinton Lions Shoreline Shootout Golf Tournament, Memorial Day Parade, Antique Auction in June, Summer Concerts on the Green, Annual Arts & Craft Fair on the Green, and live theater at the Town Hall Stage. In August, residents enjoy the Art Society Annual Show, Bluefish Festival, and Congregational Church Fair. There is a Library Gala in September and in December "Christmas in Clinton" celebrations include historic house tours, a bazaar, caroling, strolling, a Christmas tree decorating contest, town tree lighting, hayrides and more.
